Cargo may need SIT unfer a variety of situations, such as:

pending the opening of space on a high-demand vessel/route,

for cargo that stays at a port terminal beyond the terminal operators "normal free time" (see also: "detention, demurrage"),

when someone moves overseas but the cargo has to wait for visas/immigration status to be updated or for a home to be constructed or vacated by previous tenants.

Depending on the commodity, different locations are better suited to match the cargo's requirments.

High and heavy equipment such as boats on trailers, motorhomes, dump trucks, SUVs are often kept in SIT locations near to the ports, so they are properly "staged" close to the actual SS Line receiving terminal. That way, when space on a vessel opens up, the cargo will be ready. There may be a short period of time to get the cargo delivered to the pier, so "advance / forward staging" of cargo has become a well developed practise in logistics management. Getting cargo on the designated vessel can sometimes be like "threading a needle" - where the "needle" is a moving ship travelling from continent to continent.

Certain steamship lines will only accept cargo for an upcoming vessel during a short "window" of time - to match when the ship is expected to call the port of loading - which means that if the cargo is delivered too early, export storage fees may apply.

Need help with port SIT and a referral?
Ask us for the address and contact details
for one of the safe and reliable SIT locations we have come to know, located in Jacksonville port.

Courtesy contact: www.sefco-export.com/referrals/jacksonville_port.htm

Unless otherwise agreed in advance (in writing), all charges should be settled between the SIT provider and the cargo principal / shipper.
