Our work in Japan has given us a great breadth of experience in "how things work".

On his most recent visit to Japan, Sefco's Mr. Quinn met with several well respected international shipping agents with whom our company has cooperated in business. Discussions were held with managers and directors regarding the streamlining of cooperation in two different areas of our import export operations:

(1) Handling Rate Requests for Shipping Private Property
Personal Effects Export/Import Origin & Destination Services

For companies and individuals looking to ship personal property (personal effects, household goods), we refer, coordinate and direct our business to a very select group of cooperating shipping companies with the capacity, inclination and ability to handle this commodity with efficiency and the knowledge required in order to successfully arrange an overseas move of personal property.

Personal property shipments often call for origin & destination agents (abbreviated "o/a and d/a") who "know what to do" with an overseas personal property move. Depending on the location and situation, Sefco calls in the agent we think will be best suited for the job at hand.

Realize that a full-service door to door P/E move arranged and handled through SEFCO
...with over 2 dozen years experience in this field, has typically five (5) main cost components:

(1) the o/a origin agent - export packers & movers (operations)
(2) the international forwarder/export clearing agent working in concert; plus couriers and bankers (freight moves on a prepaid basis only)
(3) the nvo/ocean carrier - LCL less than container load ocean consolidator or the FCL full container load shipping line,
(4) the d/a destination agent - truckers for pier pickup, movers/unpackers for inside delivery, and the import clearing agent working on concert with same,
(5) the marine/cargo insurance broker/underwriters.

Add 1-5 together and there you get the cost
for a full service door to door "premium level" overseas move.

Please realize...
There are two different categories of agents that we deal with:
one is comprised of "overseas movers" and the other is comprised of "commercial forwarders". The two are not the same. The movers are not going to be the best route for our clients who are shipping things like: boats, yachts, heavy equipment & vehicles, commercial commodities for resale, special projects such as the movement of very large tug-boat engines, self-propelled telescoping cranes/lifts, bulldozers, etc.

Most "movers" do not handle any overseas POV vehicle shipments.

(2) Handling Commercial Cargo Shipping Requests
Vehicles, High & Heavy Equipment, Machinery, Special Projects
Customs Clearance and Export-Import Shipping Services

A "commercial cargo forwarder" will more often than not, turn down shippers with personal effects (PE) to be moved overseas. Commercially-oriented freight forwarders typically deal with accounts with consistent repeat shipments of cargo that is being sold.

This is what we refer to as working on a "commercial basis".

In contrast to commercial cargo shippers (often comprised of companies with ther own in-house traffic managers with years of experience), most "PE" personal property shippers are "one-shot" requests by individuals with little or no experience with international shipping. Therefore unless they are specialist "overseas movers" with the staff support on hand to help with extensive hand-holding, assisting with the "learning curves" as may be necessary for educating the consumer/shipper on industry practices, and so on, most commercial forwarders turn down "PE" requests.

COMMERCIAL SHIPPING SERVICE AVAILABLE
FROM THE PORT OF YOKOHAMA, JAPAN TO PORTS WORWIDE
Depending on interests of all parties involved, our commercial agent in Japan may be able to cooperate on the shipping of boats and vehicles.

Important: ALL shipments and local handling charges must be prepaid in full in advance of receipt of the cargo and prior to export. There are no exceptions to this rule. For banking details and payment methods please ask our sales department to send you exact instructions.

Shipments of boats and vehicles can be arranged via either RORO vessel, by FCL container service or other specialized means (including air). Handling requirements at origin can sometimes be complex for shipping these commodities. We know this firm and have conducted business with no problems and good results. We recommend to certain premium service overseas moving accounts that SEFCO has already dealt with, to likewise work with this company. In the past 2+ decades, SEFCO's principal has arranged export packing/shipping for a broad range of accounts, including many UN Missions, International Agencies, the US Department of State an well as private individuals. We would not hesitate having our colleagues in Japan handle the origin or destination services for any of our accounts, past, present and future. Sefco works trasparently, honestly and efficiently with all our carefully chosen international agents, vendors and carriers.

We have valuable experience and those who heed our advise and work cooperatively with our company and agents tend to have very good outcomes. With careful attention to detail and good cooperation from our agents, finding success in meeting the demands of even the most challenging of shipping assignments is quite "achievable" and indeed, replicable over the long term. Forming long term - mutually sustainable partnerships remains our primary goal.
